Are You Setting Marketing Goals?

A wall with a bullseye on it, with graffiti on the wall next to it and metal railings forming squares above. There's a blue sky with white clouds above.

When faced with marketing challenges, there can be a huge block to setting marketing goals when your to-do list is as long as your arm and you’re confused as to where to start.

And even if time wasn’t of the essence, how do you know exactly which goals you should focus on to get the optimal results?

If you're a small or medium-sized business, it can be easy to think you don't need to set specific goals and you just need to take consistent action in what must be the only direction of simply putting yourself out there.

Over the last 10 to 20 years, the buyer’s decision process has radically changed. Today it’s a lot more complex; shifting choices, priorities and triggers in the fast-developing world of a digital age, as well as a global pandemic, have all impacted the way people choose which brands they want to buy from.

In other words, loyalty has to be earned and it takes a lot more to build trust nowadays. With easy access to information, consumers shop around and compare brands. In fact, this feels more like a modern-day necessity!

And how are consumers comparing brands? Well, they are far more likely to trust influencers, celebrities, friends and family on the internet sharing what they like and dislike than the brands themselves.

Choices are ever-evolving for today’s consumer.

Think of the huge amount of content out there across different platforms, which adds to the feeling that each purchase feels like a whole new choice.

It doesn't matter whether your business is small, medium or large, for consumers to choose you, TRUST is essential! So, setting clearly defined marketing goals is vital because without them, you’re not building trust and standing out amongst all the content and competition.

Every goal should centre around this, and building an authentic connection with your customer.

And the goals set form a part of your overall marketing strategy, so what you’re working towards and everything you need to do to get there is clear and focused.

No bird’s eye view of exactly how you’re reaching the hearts and minds of the very people you’re trying to help or impact? No trust built.

A 1979 Harvard Business School MBA study on goal setting asked a graduating class one question:

Have you set written goals and created a plan for their attainment?

  • 84% of the class had set no goals.

  • 13% of the class had set written goals with no concrete plans.

  • 3% of the class had both written goals and concrete plans.

10 years later, guess who was the most successful? The 3%.

This is the common denominator of marketing success too; setting written goals AND having a concrete plan.

AKA a strategy, which you might have heard me mention once or twice around here. 😉
